‘Justify My Love’ is one of Ralf’s ‘icons’ series of artworks. But this artwork is a collection of iconic references, from the rearing Napoleonic stallion with stage fright in his eye, to the rainbow flag worn as a cape. There are numerous other symbolic items drawn into the background, some appear in all Ralf’s artworks: For instance the ‘Spooknik’ as he calls it, otherwise known as Jacks’, to Ralf symbolises ‘Play’, being one of the oldest known games. Also, in terms of design it’s three dimensional ingenuity, or simply a futuristic star.
You may also notice Apollo 11….one of mankind’s greatest achievements, the first step off this planet to elsewhere. To Ralf it not only symbolises the possibilities of our species working together but also the idealistic term ‘For All Mankind’ an ageless ethos to strive for.
The artwork is ultimately about courage and liberation. ‘Justify My Love’ not only relates to Madonna but also encapsulates a belief in the liberation of love throughout society.
