The Statue of Equality, a fantastic notion particularly when statues of inequality are being torn down around the world. In Ralf’s words “I wanted to make a statement about equality and ‘liberating love’. This piece is based in hope and optimism.
There are numerous symbolic references, some obvious, some ambiguous, some personal. The rainbow flame, and a ‘green book’ are perhaps indicative but beyond that the serious statement of Liberty is contrasted by Disney type legs…in other words, below the waist is the entertainment zone.”
The piece also includes a number of subtle and hidden references. Constants in Ralf’s work are a reference to ‘jacks’, a centuries old game, which symbolises ‘pure play’- Ralf calls the jack a ’Spooknik’. And of course Ralf himself, the Cairn Terrier is hidden in every artwork.
