‘Laika’, like much of Ralf’s work, is a montage of icons, and here a story of the 20th century ‘space age’. In Ralf’s words; “Laika a Moscow street dog, in 1957 became the first animal to orbit the earth paving the way for humans. The Starship Enterprise was beautifully designed in 1966, it’s hardly changed since and become an icon of science fiction. In the early 70’s TV viewing figures were higher for Star Trek than live coverage of the Apollo missions, whilst those who created Star Trek were fanatics about Space and Laika was one of their inspirational heroes. But fiction became more compelling than astonishing fact. I grew up expecting a space program continuing to make giant leaps... it sadly slowed down. This artwork depicts a boyhood fascination, a dream that never died.”
The piece also includes a number of subtle and hidden references. Constants in Ralf’s work are a ‘jack’ (a centuries old game) symbolising ‘pure play’, which is what art means to Ralf. Ralf calls the jack a ’Spooknik’.And of course Ralf himself, the Cairn Terrier is hidden in every artwork.
