LAX Mouse is a melange of imagery with one central theme - the comical and explosive absurdity of Los Angeles, particularly from an outsider’s view. Ralf explains: “In LA I’m never sure whether it’s effusing a sense of excitement, chaos or emptiness, or all at once. It’s the home of so much fractured fantasy, a place of dreams, symbolism and familiarity even to newcomers.”
The art is a complex montage, an intentional juxtaposition of icons, cultures, pop, art and music. There are numerous images to find in the detail of this piece… whilst a few are constants in all Ralf’s work : A set of jacks (a centuries old game) symbolising ‘pure play’, which is what art means to Ralf. And of course Ralf himself, the Cairn Terrier, is hidden in every artwork.
